Petropoulos Farm

image065   Pantelis Petropoulos is an agriculturist with lots of experience in farming and one of the earliest organic farmers in the wider region.  He is highly esteemed for his business activities in farming all over the area and he is the President of the Organic fruit and vegetables farmer Coop, which has been doing business in the production and marketing section within the frames of Bio Net West Hellas for the past 6 years

The Star Ruby Grapefruit of the estate is renowned in the European markets for its quality features (flesh color, taste of juice etc).

The farm, total area 320 acres, consists of 3 parts.

The first, 132 acre part, consists of a unified organic farm on the hills beyond Lechena  Ilias, looking out on the valley below, where various fruit and vegetables are grown. Here we find 20 acres of Nave Late Oranges, 6 acres of Clementines tangerines and 37 acres of Nova, Mineola and Fortuna tangerines, 18 acres of Star Ruby Grapefruit, 41 acres of a new plantation of Fig trees and 10 acres of newly planted Apricot trees. Another 75 acre farm, which is in Kourtesi  Ilias, is planted with various fruit and vegetables (watermelon, melon, potato etc) and the last one of 100acres in Sageika Achaia is grown with various vegetables (mostly potato and carrot).

In this farm special care is given to the issue of fertilizing and cultivations. In arboreal cultivations fertilization is achieved by means of scattering organic compost over the whole area in early autumn and then a mixed sowing of vets and oats, after the first rains. Vetch and oats plants are cut with a cutting machine in the middle of spring and create a thick layer of natural green manure for the trees. Growing vetch and oats together, reduces to a large extent the growth of self-sown plants and also, the green manure combined with the organic compost provides excellent nutrition to the soil, eliminating any need for further fertilizing. This combination helps activate and propagate all those organisms that create a healthy and alive soil.

In the farm the fertilization of the yearly cultivations is achieved by using manure from organic sheep &  goats, organic plant compost and mostly by applying rotation so that the constant alternation of crops helps growth in the sense that the previous cultivation augments the next. This combination supplies all the necessary nutrition for the crops, keeping the soil alive and healthy.

The owners of the farm are checked and certified by the certification body IRIS (GR-BIO-06) and have the following numbers of certification:
