Koutdodimos farms are in the beautiful valley of the Pinios River, in the wider area of Gastouni, Ilia. They belong to Koutsodimos family and are farmed by Dimos Koutsodimos, his wife Panagiota Koutsodimou and their two sons, Nikos and Dimitris Koutsodimos. Dimos Koutsodimos is an agriculturist greatly experienced in cultivations and is one of the oldest organic farmers in Ilia, practicing organic farming for over 10 years. Dimos koutsodimos in his farm This 160 acre farm consists of 60 acres of Oranges ( Navelina, New Hall & Washington Navel), 27 acres of Clementines, 6 acres Grapefruit, 9 acres Kiwi, 15 acres Vineyard and 13 acres with rotating cultivations (alfalfa, various vegetables and maize). Over the last 3 years new varieties of citrus have been planted in 30 acres, such as Ortanic and Nova tangerines, and Star Ruby Grapefruit.
The fertilization of the citrus in the farm is achieved by means of scattering organic compost over the whole area in early autumn and then a mixed sowing of vets and oats, after the first rains. Vetch and oats plants are cut with a cutting machine in the middle of spring and create a thick layer of natural green manure for the trees. Growing vetch and oats together, reduces to a large extent the growth of self-sown plants and also, the green manure combined with the organic compost provides excellent nutrition to the soil, eliminating any need for further fertilizing. This combination helps activate and propagate all those organisms that create a healthy and alive soil. Kostas Koutsodimos in his orchard Over the last years, the family has been involved in vinification of organic wine, capitalizing on their years of experience on organic farming of local vineyard varieties.
