West Greece is the richest region of Greece in terms of natural environment. It consists of the prefectures of Etoloacarnania, Achaia and ilia. In the wider region of West Greece there are numerous safe bays and natural harbors, tens of kilometers of unique, pristine sandy and rocky beaches. The lagoons of Mesolonghi, Ambrakikos, Kotychi, along with the countless lakes and rivers of the area, constitute the biggest complex of wetlands in the Mediterranean. More than 280 bird species have been spotted throughout the year, in the lagoons, the lakes and wetlands of the area and the surrounding hills. In the lagoon of Mesolonghi the visitor will see the biggest saltpans where enough sea salt is produced naturally to cover 90% of the country’s consumption. A lot of rare species, such as the endangered otter (mammal) can be found in the region lakes and the lagoon of Mesolonghi , as well as dolphins and sea turtles in the Ambrakikos Gulf. Virgin natural forests and lush Mediterranean vegetation cover the beautiful mountains of the area, which are the habitat of a host of rare birds such as the imperial eagle, nightingales, woodpeckers and a large number of rare mammals like the jackal, boar and deer.
It is not farfetched to claim that this region is “The Natural Park of Greece”. The region has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era, as testified by implements, made of pyrite, unearthed mostly near lake and river banks. According to mythology, gods, demigods and heroes lived, reigned and clashed in the region.
The residents of the area dynamically influenced all political things of Ancient Greece between 4th and 2nd centuries BC, a period when great cultural and financial development is achieved. Olympia in the prefecture of Ilia, was the center of athletics of the whole then known world. Numerous castles, ancient towns & theaters, stand proud and imposing even today, so densely situated that the visitor will come across the remains of an ancient citadel or a well-preserved castle with only 30 km separating them. More than 60 castles built from the ancient times to the Ottoman occupation of Greece, rate the region as a vast museum of fort architecture.
